Maximizing regional biodiversity requires a mosaic of protection levels

چکیده
Protected areas are the flagship management tools to secure biodiversity from anthropogenic impacts. However, extent which adjacent with distinct protection levels host different species numbers and compositions remains uncertain. Here, using reef fishes, European alpine plants, North American birds, we show that composition of in Strictly Protected, Restricted, Non-Protected is highly dissimilar, whereas number similar, after controlling for environmental conditions, sample size, rarity. We find between 12% 15% only recorded areas, suggesting a non-negligible part regional occurs where human activities less regulated. For imperiled species, proportion reaches 58% 11% 7% highlighting fundamental unique role protected their conditions conservation.

A Macroeconomic Model of Biodiversity Protection
Many biodiversity researchers have responded to the financial constraints faced by policy makers to develop models based upon the “Noah’s Ark” metaphor, implying that society can save only a limited amount of biodiversity. Unfortunately, as Herman Daly (Land Economics, 1991) pointed out, such microeconomic rules can allow an ark to sink albeit in some optimal fashion. So, I step back to look at...

متن کاملBiodiversity and Regional Sustainability Analysis
Evaluating sustainability at a regional level requires some assessment of the degree to which conservation and production criteria are integrated so as to provide high present and future net benefits to society. This assessment cannot be achieved simply by using indices based on comparisons for the individual criteria of observed indicator values with standards; not only may objective standards...
متن کاملPesticides reduce regional biodiversity of stream invertebrates.
The biodiversity crisis is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity, but our understanding of the drivers remains limited. Thus, after decades of studies and regulation efforts, it remains unknown whether to what degree and at what concentrations modern agricultural pesticides cause regional-scale species losses. We analyzed the effects of pesticides on the regional taxa richness of strea...
متن کاملBiodiversity conservation in agriculture requires a multi-scale approach.
Biodiversity loss--one of the most prominent forms of modern environmental change--has been heavily driven by terrestrial habitat loss and, in particular, the spread and intensification of agriculture. Expanding agricultural land-use has led to the search for strong conservation strategies, with some suggesting that biodiversity conservation in agriculture is best maximized by reducing local ma...
